On the sea island of Kotlin locating 30 km to the west of St.-Petersburg there is a town of Kronstadt - a marine fortress of St.-Petersburg, its onetime navy and trade sea gate for more than 200 years and the former Soviet Navy base where you can still see warships docked in the harbour.
Kronstadt is nearly the same age as St-Petersburg being over 300 years old. It is the symbol of Russian Navy.
Kronstadt is the place where many eminent Russian naval commanders began their naval service and most Russian North Pole and Arctic Ocean explorers started their expeditions.
The history of Kronstadt is related to the times of the Northern War which Peter I waged against Sweden in the early 18th century costructing forts around the island to protect it and St.-Petersburg. Most of those forts are still there and some of them are accessible to visitors by land or by boat.
The artillery fort Konstantine put up in 1808, once defending the southern harbours of Kronstadt, is one of the biggest fortification structures near the island of Kotlin. There one can still find abandoned old artillery batteries, underground barracks and a rangefinder pavilion.
The fort Reef is a very valuable monument of the Russian fortification history and one of the most interesting forts of Kronstadt locating on the western shore of the island and having a stunning view over the " Seal bed" and Tolbukhin beacon- the oldest Russian lighthouse constructed in 1719 by order of Peter I. The length of the fort underground galleries is biggest of all the other forts.
The gem of Kronstadt is St.Nicolas Naval Cathedral- a huge church whose dome is seen to a distance of 45 km reminding of the Cathedral of Ayasofya in Istanbul.
Kronstadt is home to the sounding rod with a mark of the zero sea level on it. It is the place where a lot of important scientific discoveries were made. It is there where you can find the Tree of wishes that will make your dreams come true.
Every year it attracts more and more visitors.
